Radiologist

A radiologist is a medical specialist who mainly focuses on diagnosing conditions using further investigations. A well-known example of a further investigation is an X-ray.

The radiologist uses X-rays, ultrasound, MRI scans and CT scans to determine what is causing symptoms. This makes organs, bones, muscles and other tissues visible so they can be assessed.

Some radiologists not only diagnose conditions but also perform treatments, such as angioplasty for a narrowed blood vessel. During the treatment, the radiologist uses imaging techniques to check that everything is proceeding as planned. This is called interventional radiology.

A radiologist works closely with the radiographer, who operates most of the equipment. Other doctors often ask the radiologist to help make a diagnosis by assessing an X-ray or scan.
