Rheumatologist

Rheumatology

Joint or organ problems involving inflammation are considered rheumatic complaints. A rheumatologist can help with rheumatic complaints. Rheumatologists assess and treat people with rheumatic conditions.

About 100 different conditions are classified as rheumatic diseases. These are conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system that are not caused by an accident. The most common symptoms of rheumatic disease are pain, stiffness, fatigue and swollen joints. Patients usually have had these symptoms for some time before eventually being referred to a rheumatologist, who can make a diagnosis.

Appointment with the rheumatologist

An appointment with the rheumatologist begins with a discussion about the symptoms and problems. This is followed by a physical examination in which the joints are examined and tested.

A joint aspiration, blood tests or an X-ray may be needed to make the correct diagnosis. Once the problem is clear, treatment begins. This may involve medication or surgery, as well as lifestyle advice.

Working with other specialists

The rheumatologist often works with other specialists, such as the orthopaedic specialist if surgery is required, or the neurologist when pain relief is needed. A physiotherapist is also often involved to help people move better again or learn to manage their limitations.
