Brace

A brace is an aid that compensates for the loss of function of body parts and/or offers protection against (further) damage. A brace can be made of flexible fabric, hard plastic or metal. There are braces for different body parts and joints.

A brace usually has a supportive function. In case of damage to muscles, tendons, joints, or ligaments, it can compensate for any instability.

Braces are also used to give tendons or joints rest, similar to a cast. Unlike a cast, a brace is removable and usually does not have to be worn 24 hours a day. You often only wear it during strenuous activities. Ask a physiotherapist for advice.
