Muscle coordination

Muscles enable movement and provide stability to our joints. For smooth and efficient movement, muscles must work together in coordination. This collaboration is essential to position joints and bones correctly, a process known as muscle coordination.

The cooperation between muscles becomes clear when we compare muscles to elastic bands. For example, consider the muscles at the back of the thigh (the hamstrings) and those at the front (the quadriceps femoris). These muscles must work together to allow knee flexion. When bending the knee, the elastic band at the back (hamstrings) must contract, which is only possible if the elastic band at the front (the quadriceps) relaxes, lengthens, and allows the movement.

If this cooperation fails, a movement dysfunction or instability occurs. This is usually not related to a loss of strength but rather to a disruption in the 'interaction' of neuromuscular control. Neuromuscular control involves tensing and/or relaxing specific muscles at the right time to achieve smooth, stable movement.

Returning to our example: if the elastic band at the front (quadriceps) does not function properly and cannot relax adequately, the movement becomes jerky. In the worst case, knee flexion may become impossible. This might seem unusual since the elastic band (the muscle) is attached at both ends (by tendons). The issue lies in neuromuscular control: the cooperation between muscles is disrupted.
