Iliotibial band friction syndrome

Iliotibial band syndrome

The tractus iliotibialis friction syndrome is an outdated name for a running injury that is also sometimes seen in mountain hikers. The pain is felt on the outside of the knee.

New name for the tractus iliotibialis friction syndrome

It was always thought that the injury was the result of friction between a tendon called the tractus iliotibialis and bony tissue of the knee joint. This turns out not to be the case. That is why we now speak of iliotibial band syndrome when we refer to this condition.
