Orthopaedic specialist

An orthopaedic specialist is a doctor who specialises in treating problems affecting the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes bones, muscles, tendons and joints. Treatment may be surgical or non-surgical.

People who see an orthopaedic specialist often have pain and/or limitations in physical function. For example, they may have knee problems due to osteoarthritis, or scoliosis that causes back pain.

The orthopaedic specialist will first ask about the symptoms and how they developed. A physical examination will then be carried out. Further tests may be performed to examine the problem in more detail, such as an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI scan. An arthroscopy may also be possible.

Based on this, the orthopaedic specialist proposes treatment. If surgery is not needed, appropriate information or medication may help. Orthopaedic specialists also often refer patients to a physiotherapist for further treatment.

Sometimes surgery is the only option, for example when a joint needs replacing or a broken bone must be repaired with plates and screws. The orthopaedic surgeon performs this operation. Physiotherapy often follows surgery to support complete recovery.
