Thumb brace
A thumb brace (support band) is intended to support and guide the thumb during movements. It helps reduce pain and promote recovery. Thumb braces are used for an injury such as a tendonitis, a skier's thumb and thumb osteoarthritis. But also after an operation or precisely to prevent (new) injuries.
When is the use of a thumb brace necessary?
With complaints of the thumb such as with osteoarthritis, a skier's thumb or De Quervain's disease, a thumb brace relieves the complaints. Depending on the material of the brace, (part of) the thumb cannot or can move less well. Hard braces allow less movement than soft ones. Thumb braces thus provide more stability and support during movements or with reduced muscle strength.
With early complaints the use of a brace slows down the increase in pain and further damage.
How long should you use a thumb brace?
When and how long a brace is worn depends on the complaints. In some cases wearing the brace is only necessary during certain activities. Sometimes it is necessary to wear the thumb brace continuously. This is done in consultation with the doctor or (hand) physiotherapist. They can also advise which type of thumb brace is best. A custom-made thumb brace is also possible.
As soon as possible, wearing the brace is phased out. The thumb has become accustomed to the support of the thumb brace. If the brace is worn for a long time, the muscles slacken and the thumb joints stiffen.
Is more than a thumb brace needed to recover?
Wearing a thumb brace alone is not sufficient as a solution for the complaints. The thumb injury is a sign of an overuse or underlying condition. For good treatment it is necessary to identify the cause of the complaints. Contact a doctor or specialised hand physiotherapist for this.
