Paediatric physiotherapy

Patients from 0 to 18 years can contact the paediatric physiotherapist. The paediatric physiotherapist treats children with a delay in their movement development, or children who struggle with problems of certain movement skills.

Target group

In babies, for example, there may be a positional preference, causing the head to grow asymmetrically. In older children, there may be a delay in movement development. Consider physically or mentally disabled children, but also children in whom fine or gross motor skills are (not yet) sufficiently developed.

The paediatric physiotherapist also treats children who suffer from (growing) pains, injuries, or other relevant physical symptoms. Children can also contact a general physiotherapist for this, but the paediatric physiotherapist generally has more knowledge of the target group.

It may concern children who cannot keep up with their peers physically. When they are bullied or excluded because of their limitation, this can also lead to psycho-social symptoms.

Because a child cannot always indicate a problem well, good communication between the paediatric physiotherapist, parents, and/or teachers is very important. They are often the first to notice a problem and raise the alarm.

An appointment with the paediatric physiotherapist

The paediatric physiotherapist will, after hearing the parents' and/or child's side of things, conduct an examination and perform tests that are specifically aimed at mapping the problem.

In the case of movement problems in the child, the skills that are not well developed are trained by means of exercises. This is done in a way that children also find fun and interesting. Learning thus takes place through play. Parents and teachers are given advice on how best to support and encourage the child in daily life.

Where does a paediatric physiotherapist work?

A paediatric physiotherapist often works in a private practice, rehabilitation centre, or in schools. There is often cooperation with other disciplines, such as a speech therapist, child psychologist, and paediatrician.
