Soft neck collar
Soft cervical collar, soft neck brace
A soft neck collar is a band of foam rubber that sits around the neck and is fastened with a Velcro closure. The neck collar supports the neck.
When do you wear a soft neck collar?
In many cases, it is actually good to (continue to) move the neck, because this keeps the blood flow and the condition of the muscles and joints up to standard. But sometimes it is necessary to support the neck temporarily and therefore to wear a soft neck collar. For example, in osteoarthritis, a whiplash, or after an operation in this area.
After that, it is important to start moving again slowly to build up the mobility of the neck. Soft neck collars are also fine to protect the neck during sleep.
What does a soft neck collar do?
A soft neck collar supports the cervical spine. The collar also limits the freedom of movement so that the neck gets rest. This relaxes the neck muscles and reduces the pain complaints. Soft neck collars are more comfortable than hard neck collars and still allow some movement. It is usually not necessary to wear a soft neck collar 24 hours a day.
Discuss with the treating doctor or physiotherapist how long the neck collar should be worn.
For more serious neck disorders, there is a hard neck collar. This provides more protection, does not allow movement, and must be worn all day.
