MRI scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This imaging technique uses a scanner to visualize joints, muscles, tendons, nerves, the brain, and organs. It creates a series of cross-sectional images (slices). By scanning different slices sequentially, a complete picture of the body or body part is obtained.
A strong magnetic field, combined with radio waves, ensures that different body tissues are clearly visualized. This technique uses non-harmful radiation.
The device creates images by detecting the alternating vibrations (resonance) of hydrogen particles in the tissues. Tissues with more water content, such as organs, appear whiter in the images, while areas with little to no fluid, like the lungs, appear darker or black.
The examination
During the examination, the patient lies on a narrow bed that moves into the MRI scanner, which is shaped like a narrow tunnel. This can be challenging for individuals with claustrophobia or severe overweight. For these patients, an open MRI scanner is available to address these concerns.
Once inside the tunnel, it is important to remain still to ensure clear images. The scanner is quite noisy, but headphones with music and earplugs help reduce the sound. The patient is given a call button for communication. The technician performing the scan is in another room but can communicate with the patient via a microphone.
What to bring and what not to bring during an MRI
Due to the strong magnetic field in and around the scanner, no metal objects are allowed nearby. This includes piercings, jewelry, zippers, and buttons. Patients should wear comfortable, metal-free clothing. Metal-free clothing is available upon request before entering the scanner.
Individuals with devices such as pacemakers or metal fragments in the eye cannot undergo an MRI scan. Pregnancy may also be a contraindication. It is important to consider these factors beforehand. Patients must complete a questionnaire before the scan to ensure it is safe for them to enter the MRI scanner.
Result of the MRI scan
An MRI scan can examine almost all body tissues, unlike an X-ray. After the scan, the images are available on a computer, allowing for detailed examination of the body to identify problems.
Conditions that are clearly visible on an MRI scan include:
- Tears in the cruciate ligaments or meniscus of the knee
- Muscle tears
- Herniated discs
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Brain abnormalities
How long does an MRI take?
An MRI scan typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the number of images needed. Larger areas require more time. Fasting is not necessary for this examination. A radiologist reviews the images and prepares a report. The results are later communicated by the treating physician.
