Barbell
A barbell (or halter) is a long bar with space at both ends to carry weights. These weights are usually in the form of plates that you can add or remove as desired. Barbells are an essential part of strength training and are often used for exercises that train multiple muscle groups at the same time. They are ideal for both beginners and advanced users who want to build their strength and muscle mass.
Which exercises can you do with a barbell?
There are numerous exercises you can do with a barbell. The best-known exercises are the squat, deadlift and bench press, which mainly target the legs, back and chest muscles respectively. Because the weights on both sides are adjustable, the barbell is suitable for both light and heavy training.
Advantages and disadvantages of barbells
One of the biggest advantages of barbells is the ability to lift heavy weights. In addition, barbell exercises are often compound, which means that they train multiple muscle groups simultaneously. Another advantage is that barbells, due to their length, offer the possibility to train symmetrically, which helps to maintain muscle balance.
A disadvantage of barbells is that they take up more space than other weights such as dumbbells or kettlebells. In addition, training with a barbell without good technique or guidance can lead to injuries, especially with the heavier exercises.
Types of barbells
Barbells are usually made of steel, but can also have a coating of chrome or rubber to make them more durable. They come in different types and sizes, for example:
- Olympic barbell: This is the most common barbell in gyms, with a length of about 2.20 metres and a weight of 20 kg for men and 15 kg for women. The Olympic barbell is designed for heavy lifts such as the squat, deadlift and bench press.
- Curl bar (EZ-bar): This barbell has a curved shape, which relieves the wrists during biceps curls and triceps extensions. The curvature of the EZ-bar helps to reduce the pressure on the wrists and make the movement more comfortable.
- Hex bar (trap bar): This barbell has a hexagonal shape in which you can stand in the middle. This design makes it ideal for deadlifts, because the weight is evenly distributed around your body, which reduces the load on your lower back.
- Shrug bar: This is similar to the hex bar, but specifically designed for shoulder shrugs (shrugs) to train the trapezius muscles. It has handles on the sides to shrug the shoulders comfortably.
