Oedema therapy
Oedema is another word for a build-up of fluid somewhere in the body where it does not belong. An oedema therapist can help you get rid of it.
People can, for example, suffer from oedema with cancer or a problem of the blood or lymph vessels. Oedema can also occur after an operation, accident or radiotherapy.
Treatment with oedema therapy
An oedema therapist has different treatment techniques at their disposal to stimulate the drainage of excess fluid. Think of muscle and breathing exercises through which the fluid is, as it were, pumped away and drained through the blood and lymph vessels.
Certain postures can also reduce swelling. The oedema therapist knows which postures are and are not good for fluid accumulations in a particular body region.
The oedema therapist can also use a special massage technique. Here the fluid is moved by the therapist's hand techniques to parts of the body that can absorb the fluid. This will always be in the direction of the heart.
To prevent, for example, the legs from swelling again during the day, special stockings or bandages can also be used.
Where does an oedema therapist work?
An oedema physiotherapist often works in a private practice and will collaborate with surgeons, oncologists and GPs.
